Conowingo Cliff Jumper's Death Ruled Accidental

A Delaware man fell to his death north of the Conowingo Dam.

A 25-year-old Delaware man died over the weekend after falling from a cliff north of the Conowingo Dam, according to Maryland Natural Resources Police.

Zachary James of Wyoming, DE, fell approximately 65 feet after slipping from a platform at Wildcat Point on July 27, according to CecilDaily.com.

The death was ruled accidental, according to Bruce Goldfarb, spokesman for the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Drowning and torso injuries were determined to be the cause, Goldfarb said Monday.

Police were called at 2:10 p.m. Saturday, Sgt. Brian Albert of Maryland Natural Resources Police told Patch.

"A group of younger adults were cliff jumping," Albert said. "The eyewitness accounts are that he slipped…he hit the water in an awkward way, which caused him to go underneath the water, and he did not resurface."

Divers from the Susquehanna Hose Company recovered James' body at 4 p.m. Saturday, Albert said; it was 22 feet below the surface of the Susquehanna River.

A funeral will be held for James on Thursday, Aug. 1, at Pippin Funeral Home in Camden-Wyoming, DE.
