Smigiel: Gov. O'Malley Passes On Cecil Delegate For Senate Seat

Gov. O'Malley selected a Queen Anne's politician, instead, to replace departed Sen. E.J. Pipkin.

Del. Michael Smigiel wrote to his constituents Tuesday evening to inform them that Gov. Martin O'Malley selected another candidate to fill the term of departed Senator E.J. Pipkin.

Smigiel, in a post on Twitter, thanked his supporters while informing them O'Malley had chosen Del. Steve Hershey of Queen Anne's County for the post.

Smigiel and Hershey were the candidates to replace Pipkin, who resigned in August. Because the local Republican committees were unable to name a replacement, the duty fell on O'Malley to name a delegate from his rival party.

The position will be up for election in 2014. Smigiel has already announced his intention to run for the senate seat next year.

Pipkin had endorsed Smigiel for the seat.
