Port Deposit to Celebrate Town Bicentennial

Community members will gather in downtown Port Deposit on Saturday to celebrate their home's history.

A dedication ceremony for the new mural on the side of the post office will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 12, according to ExploreHarford.com.

The War of 1812 mural was funded by grant money from the Star Spangled 200, a nonprofit that aims to educate and involve Marylanders in the state's War of 1812 bicentennial.

In addition to the $10,500 grant from the state, local residents and area businesses also contributed to the mural project, according to the Port Deposit Chamber of Commerce, which is coordinating the bicentennial event.

In February, residents voted on what the mural would depict. The painting on South Main Street shows a man from the First Independent Rifle Company defending Port Deposit from the British, which happened 200 years ago. Area artists Two Dudes were commissioned to do the work, which was completed between April and May on the side of the Port Deposit Post Office building.

As part of the celebration on Saturday, a time capsule will be be buried and a proclamation about the town's 200-year-history will be read.

Refreshments will be available at the celebration, which will take place from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, July 20, in downtown Port Deposit.
